The owners of Coco Confectionary are champions of vegan sweets who believe that ‘it is not impossible to cut out animal products and still enjoy sweet, traditional treats.’ Wherever possible, Coco also ensure they don't stock sweets that come in non-recyclable plastic packaging. For their own packaging Coco use compostable bags, tissue paper and up-cycled bubble-wrap. Coco Confectionary have achieved the Surfers Against Sewage ‘Plastic Free Champion’ award.

Hobbs House Bakery
Hobbs House Bakery is a family business established in the 1920s. Their bakery based in Chipping Sodbury uses locally produced flour (Shipton Mill, 15miles away) and coffee and other food supplies that are delivered across a maximum distance of 25 miles. Their packaging is produced in the local town and 75% of their staff live within 5 miles of work. Hobbs pay particular attention to reducing their waste, ensuring that most of their packaging is compostable. Coffee grounds from Hobbs shops are given to customers for composting, and mild dispensers are available in all the shops.

Natural Cookery School
The Natural Cookery School is a vegan and vegetarian cookery school that hosts class and parties as well as catering for events. They also offer takeaway food for collection locally. The Natural Cookery School use foods that have been minimally processed – whole grains, fresh local produce and organic ingredients. Erin, the owner, is passionate about sharing her knowledge of plant-based cookery, including techniques to naturally preserve foods. The packaging used for takeaway food is compostable.

Ruskin Mill Farm Shop
The Ruskin Mill Farm Shop in Horsley reopened in July 2020 after a big renovation project. Inside the spacious shop is a broad range of organic products, while the vegetable stand outside offers organic and biodynamic produce grown on Gables Farm by Ruskin Mill College students and staff.

Shiny Goodness
A health food shop providing a range of refill services (Faith in Nature shampoo, conditioner and hand wash, plus Ecover and Bio-D cleaning products) and loose products (nuts, seeds, grains, dried fruit and pasta). You can also bring your own bottles and buy local dairy milk. There are also a range of natural remedies, locally sourced produce and “free-from” alternatives. Junglist
Junglist are a ‘botanical atelier’: somewhere to buy interesting plants and accessories as well as attend plant-related workshops and talks. Within the plastic-heavy plants industry, Junglist are striving to minimise their use of single-use plastic in every way possible, from favouring suppliers who wrap their plants in paper to sourcing planters made from recycled plastic. Junglist have achieved the Surfers Against Sewage ‘Plastic Free Champion’ award.

Pulp
Pulp have been working hard to become as sustainable as possible. They have replaced sellotape with plant-based eco sellotape and have a large range of paper tapes, including paper parcel tape (plastic parcel tape is no longer sold). Pulp are opting for ‘naked’ cards or only biodegradable packaging, and have replaced all gift wrap with recyclable wrap and their own Nailsworth wrap, books and tape are made from recycled paper, are fully recyclable and made in the UK. Pulp is also now selling approx 75% refillable pen products, and are selling only recyclable filing products which are made from recycled plastics. Pulp is using a paperless till so receipts can be sent via email or text, saving a lot of wasted paper.

Soap Folk
Based at Inchbrook Mill, just outside Nailsworth, the small team at Soap Folk make gentle, handmade soap bars and skincare products, taking great pride in using the best quality natural and organic ingredients. Sustainable and ethical credentials are at the top of the agenda. You won't find any palm oil or plastic soap packaging here and there is even an All Kinds Soap Subscription that offers soap offcuts. Soap Folk offer Bike Drop delivery locally and have been achieved the Surfers Against Sewage ‘Plastic Free Champion’ award.

James Lear of Arundel
Owner Polly Smart tries to buy from companies that place sustainable materials at the centre of their ethos. Many of the items in the shop are made from recycled materials, including jeans made from recycled plastic, recycled wool blankets and recycled cotton blankets. The shop also stocks a range of socks made from bamboo, organic cotton and recycled polyester, and organic cotton T-shirts that are made in an award-winning fair trade factory run by renewable energy. There are also 100% plastic-free greetings cards, printed on FSC board paper.
Nailsworth Computer Shop
Offering computer repairs and reserviced computers for sale, the Nailsworth Computer Shop is enabling people to extend the life of their machines. 99% of repairs are carried out on the same day and there is a ‘no fix, no fee’ policy. The shop is also a recycling hub for printer cartridges and computers that are beyond repair (which are recycled via a metal recycling service based in Forest of Dean).
